Friday Gameday

RED DEER REBELS VS KELOWNA ROCKETS - 7:30 - ENMAX CENTRIUM

I'll have the pregame show starting at 7 oclock (www.big105.fm) from the Molson Canadian Lounge.

-Red Deer is coming off Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Oil Kings in Edmonton, in a game that's become all too familiar. 30 plus shots for Red Deer once again, but no finish, and an 0'fer night on the powerplay, in this case, 0 for 5.

-Speaking of special teams, heading into this one, the powerplay is 20th out of 22 (14.4 %) while the penalty kill is 21st out of 22 (74.8 %). The Rebs havs also scored just three shorthanded goals, which is last in the WHL.

-Cass Mappin, Carter Smith, and Steve Oursov are all still out for Red Deer.

-The last time the Rockets were in town, it was just prior to the christmas break. Both Jamie Benn and Tyler Meyers were with Team Canada at the WJC's, while defenseman Tyson Barrie was injured. They're all back tonight, and in addition, the Rockets have since added Flames first-rounder Michael Backlund to the team.

-The Rockets are 8-1-0-1 in their last 10, and have points in their last five. Couple that with the Rebels current six-game losing slide, and you have two teams going in opposite directions.

If there are any lineup changes tonight, I'll get them on here prior to gametime. Expect to see Darcy Kuemper in net.

-------------

Rebels top prospect Ryan Nugent-Hopkins continues to lead the B.C. Major Midget League in scoring with 37 goals, 45 assists, and 82 points in just 34 games. Hopkins team, the Vancouver Northwest Giants, who sit with a league-leadig record of 31-3-4, have just two regular season games to go before the playoffs.

Needless to say, Red Deer probably won't be fortunate enough to pick up his services late in the season.

The possibility still exists that Red Deer could pickup 15 year-old second rounder Daulton Siwak for the rest of the year. Siwak and the AAA Midget optimist Rebels are currently behind 1-0 to Lethbridge in a second-round best of five.

Game two in this series is set for tonight at the Red Deer Arena (8 p.m.)
-------------

The Bentley Generals play host to Fort Sask tonight in game five of the Sr. AAA Provincial Final. Game time is 8:30 in Bentley. The Chiefs have been a handful in this series, which is currently tied up at 2-2.

Justin Pesony, standout goaltender for Fort Sask, is a former MVP in the SJHL. I got to know Pesony quite well while covering him with the Battleford's North Stars five years ago. He's also married to the daughter of former NHL'er and Oilers assistant coach Charlie Huddy.

If you're into fantasy hockey, a great website to check out is www.dobberhockey.com I've teams up with the owner/operater of the site, Darryl Dobbs, and am now hosting his monthly fantasy hockey podcast. Whther it's just hockey info you're looking for, or hockey pool info, I really have found it to be a great site. check it out if you have time.

That's all I have for now. Looking fwd to seeing the Rockets tonight.

Wednesday gameday - Sutter sent down

RED DEER REBELS @ EDMONTON OIL KINGS - 7 P.M. (REXALL PLACE)

-Pregame show with Cam Moon at 6:50 (www.big105.fm)

---------

Former RD Rebel captain Brandon Sutter has been sent to the AHL by the Carolina Hurricanes for a two-week conditioning stint. Sutter has one goal and five assists in 50 games this season, and has been a healthy scratch for the last few. The Hurricanes lost 4-2 in Ottawa last night.

-----------------------------
The AAA Midget Optimist Rebels are in Lethbridge tonight for game one of round two.

The Red Deer Vipers head to Blackfalds to face the Wranglers - game one in Heritage Jr. B North Semifinal (best of five)

-----
Last night, the Bentley Generals dropped a 5-4 decision in Fort Saskatchewan. The best of seven provincial semi is now tied 2-2, game five goes in Bentley Friday

Tuesday Injury Update

First off, congratulations to the Red Deer Vipers, who punched their ticket to the heritage Jr B. North Semi-final with a 4-2 win over the Mountainview Colts in the third and deciding game of that series last night.

Red Deer will face the Blackfalds Wranglers next in a best of five, the schedule has yet to be released, but the series is to be completed by March 6th
----------------

RED DEER REBELS @ EDMONTON OIL KINGS - Wednesday Night
(7 p.m. - www.big105.fm)

With three games against the Oil Kings the rest of the way, the Rebs have a chance to play spoiler here in the home stretch, and become the best friend of the Pats and Raiders. Edmonton currently sits in a tie with P.A. for the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

It looks like Carter Smith could be done for the season, the 20 year old is listed as OUT INDEFINITELY after dislocating his knee Saturday night. Cass Mappin is also unlikely to return this season, and Steve Oursov is still sidelined with a concussion.

While I'm glad to see the AAA Midgets move on to the second round of the playoffs, a silver lining of their elimination would be the addition of 15 year-old Daulton Siwak to the Rebels roster for the rest of the season.

Huge win for AAA Midget's - Saturday Thriller for Rebs

The playoff run will continue for the AAA Midget Optimist Rebels. Facing elimination for a second consecutive night, the Rebs pull out their second straight victory, 4-2 Sunday over the UFA Bisons in Strathmore.

The Optimist Rebels (16-15-3) open up a best of five series with the Lethbridge Y's men Titans ( 21-6-7) in Lethbridge on Wednesday Night.

Game two: @ Red Deer - 8 p.m. - Friday Feb 27th

Game three: @ Leth - 2:30 p.m. - Sunday Mar 1

Game four: @ Red Deer - 7:45 p.m. - Tuesday Mar 3

----------------------
In Heritage Jr B playoff action last night, the Red Deer Vipers win on the road over the Mountainview Colts 8-3, forcing a third and deciding game in their North Quarterfinal.

The rubbermatch goes tonight at the Red Deer Arena (7:30 p.m.)

---------------

RED DEER REBELS

Hopefully I'll get an update on the status of Carter Smith today. The Rebels 20 year-old went into the boards awkwardly in overtime Saturday night, and had to be helped off the ice. Smith was on crutches after the game, and hoped to learn the extent of his injury Sunday. Word is it could be a dislocated knee-cap, and as a result, that would probably do it for Smith's final season in the WHL.

On the ice, it was a tale of two games for the Rebs over the weekend. Things got ugly on Friday in CGY, as the Hitmen led it 5-0 after one and eventually emerged with a 7-2 win. Brandon Kozun had a four point night for the Hitmen, topping the 100 point mark on the season. Seriously, some NHL team needs to take a flyer on Kozun, and i'm sure someone will, although it will be interesting to see if he goes in the top three rounds.

Luke Egener, the Calgary native, scored in his final Saddledome game for Red Deer, his fourth goal of the season, while Colin Archer also found the net.

Saturday, the Rebs put on an impressive show at the Centrium, playing a terrific game, but losing to the Hitmen 2-1 in a shootout. This was as close to a playoff-style game as we've seen all season from Red Deer, and was an absolute battle from start to finish.

Luke Egener, with his 5th, opened the scoring for Red Deer, before Michael Stone tied it up with 3:50 to go in the third. Willie Coetzee scored in the shootout for Red Deer, but CGY got goals from Joel Broda and Kris Foucault to win it.

The Rebels veterans were phenomenal in this one....Brennan Wray did a remarkable job in a shut-down role, while Cody Gross, Carter Smith, and Jordie Deagle all had strong games as well.

- Hitmen defenseman and RD native Paul Postma went hard into the end boards and left the game in the first period. Good news for Paul though, as it looks like he'll be back skating this week and is listed as day-to-day.

-Rebels return to action this Wednesday in Edmonton against the Oil Kings (7 p.m. - http://www.big105.fm/) with a chance to play spoiler. With Prince Albert's overtime loss to Kootenay Sunday night, coupled with Regina's 4-1 win over Moose Jaw, the standings look like this.

8. - Prince Albert - 59 pts

8. - Edmonton - 59 pts

10. - Regina - 56 pts

-The Pats have two games in hand on both teams, but the only team they've beat in recent memory has been the MJ Warriors, so even with back to back wins, I'm having a hard time believing the Pats have put the peices back together.

RD - CGY home and home - Polak Gone.

RED DEER REBELS @ CALGARY HITMEN - 7 p.m. (Pengrowth Saddledome)

Cam Moon has the pregame show tonight starting at 6:50 (www.big105.fm)

---------

-The Rebs have lost all four games to Calgary this season, but have looked competitve at times, holding two goal leads twice on the road, including in the season-opener.

-The Hitmen are ranked 2nd in the nation in this weeks Mosaic Mastercard Top 10

-NEWS FROM THIS MORNING: 18 year-old import F Tomas Polak is heading home to the Czech Republic. It's been back-to-back frustrating years for Polak, who has become a fixture in the press box ever since the New Year. We've likely seen the last of Polak, and Red Deer hopefully can find an import to kick-start the offense next season.

-F Steve Oursov won't be in the lineup this weekend, and his status for the rest of the season is still uncertain. He was walking around the Centrium yesterday, but is still recovering from a concussion suffered when he was KO'd Tuesday night in a fight against the Blades Charles Inglis.

---------

-Tough loss for the AAA Midget Optimist Rebels last night, 3-2 in double OT to the UFA Bisons in Strathmore. The game winner was a controversial one, as it was scored with the net off it's moorings after a collision in the crease. The Bisons lead the best of three 1-0, with game two set for tomorrow afternoon (4:45 p.m.) at the Red Deer Arena. Shane Goodrunning and Justin Faux scored for Red Deer.

-The RDC Queens lost their first ACAC playoff game as well last night, 3-2 to Mount Royal in an upset. The Queens need a win tonight in CGY to keep their season going.

-The AAA bantams (Black) are in tough in their first-round series with Lethbridge. They dropped game one 9-2 last night

-Tonight: RD Vipers vs Mountainview - RD Arena - 8 p.m. (game one in best of three quarterfinal)

Benltey Generals @ Fort Sask Chiefs - (Chiefs lead best of seven 1-0)

Where are the goals? Rebels blanked

SASKATOON BLADES 3 RED DEER REBELS 0

-The good news right now is that the Red Deer Rebels are coming into their own defensively. Five on five play has been outstanding in the defensive zone the last few weeks.....The problem is, the goals are becoming increasingly harder to come by, and for a team that doesn't score a lot at the best of times, it doesn't bode very well.

-Last night was a very similar storyline to what we've seen over the last while. 38 shots on goal for Red Deer, a very strong effort, some great chances, but nothing to show for it, and a low-scoring loss.

-Brayden Holtby was outstanding in net Tuesday. Lately though, Todd Matthews, Michael Tajdeh, and Justin Leclerc have all looked exceptional as well......coincidence?

--The 3-0 loss was the fourth time Red Deer has been held off the scoresheet in the last ten games. In those 10 games, they've managed to score just 13 goals.

-Again, I'll be the first to praise the defensive play of this team. They've gotten better and better in their own zone, and that's what you want to see as the year wears on......improvement.

-Darcy Kuemper has found his groove again, and except for Luke Egener, the Rebs should get ALL of their dmen back next season, a year older and a year better. One only hopes that the offense takes the same jump, because right now, 146 goals just isn't enough, and is by far the lowest total in the conference.

Rebels get back at it Friday/Saturday against the CGY Hitmen. Friday is a 7 oclock start at the Saddledome, Saturday is a 7:30 start here in Red Deer (7 p.m. pregame www.big105.fm)
--------------

A TON of playoff hockey here in Central Alberta over the next little while.

Tonight - The Bentley Generals begin their 2009 Provincial Playoffs against Fort Saskatchewan. Game one in the best of seven Semi goes at 8:30 in Bentley.

Thursday - AAA Midget Optimist Rebels open up round one on the round in Strathmore against the UFA Bisons. (game one in the best of three)

Thursday - RDC Queens Hockey vs Mount Royal - game one, round one (7 p.m. RD Arena)

Friday - Red Deer Vipers - Heritage Jr B playoffs vs Mountainview Colts - Red Deer Arena

Bentley wins Chinook League title...Rebels wknd

No surprise here: Another great senior hockey game Monday night at the Red Deer Arena.

Joe Vandermeer scored the eventual game-winner while shorthanded in the second period, and the Bentley Generals held on for a 5-4 win over the Stony Plain Eagles, capturing the Chinook League title two games to one.

Bentley was up 5-2 after Vandermeer's goal, but Stony never gave up, picking up back to back goals in the third before nearly tying the game in the final seconds.

This series was just a precursor to the likely eventual Provincial Final, which almost always features these two teams.

The Generals face Fort Sask in a best of seven Provincial semifinal starting Wednesday night.
-------------

A pretty decent weekend for the Rebels. A record of 1-1-1, including a 2-1 win over the Kootenay Ice Friday, a 3-0 loss in Lethbridge Saturday, and a 4-3 shootout loss in Cranbrook Sunday.

Good to see Landon Ferraro finally bust out of a slump. A goal and two helpers Sunday night. Hopefully it jump-starts a solid end to the season for Landon.

Carter Smith continues to play well, two points Friday, and another goal Sunday night, bringing his total up to 18.

The Rebels host the Saskatoon Blades Tuesday night at the Enmax Centrium - 7 p.m. (www.big105.fm)

--------------
-Another shutout for former Rebel Cam Ward Sunday night, 3-0 over Buffalo

-Martin Hanzal was back in the lineup for the Phoenix Coyotes Monday against Edmonton. He had missed three games with a shoulder problem.

-Red Deer's Chris Mason continues his red hot play in between the pipes for St.Louis, picking up another win (2-1 over NYR) Monday

-Former Rebel Dustin Moore (U of Lethbridge) is enroute to China to play in the 2009 Universiade championships.

-The Carolina Hurricanes will retire Red Deer native Glen Wesley's jersey Tuesday night, no surprise here...but I wasn't able to convince Glen to make an appearance on my show this week to say congratulations. He is truly , completely, 100 percent dissasociated with Red Deer now I guess.

Friday AM

GAMEDAY - RED DEER REBELS VS KOOTENAY ICE - 7:30 P.M. (ENMAX CENTRIUM)

I'll have the pregame show starting at 7 p.m. (http://www.big105.fm/)

-The Rebs have lost six of their last seven, while the Ice have been on a tear, going 6-2-2 in their last ten and moving up to 6th in the Eastern Conference.

GAMEDAY UPDATE

It looks like Cass Mappin has a broken foot, and is out indefinitely. Brennan Wray is back in the lineup this evening. here's what the lines will look like:

Deagle - Ferraro - Coetzee

Esposito - Wray - Smith

Cowen - Ferguson - Kot

Redmond - Kambietz - Oursov

Archer - Egener
Morin - Petrovic
Kivisto - Weller

Darcy Kuemper gets the start between the pipes.

-----------------

Coming up Tuesday night in Carolina...the Hurricanes will retire the jersey of Red Deer native Glen Wesley. Not exactly a guy that comes "home" to Red Deer anymore...Wesley has been an American for about 20 years while playign for the Bruins, Whalers, and 'Canes, winning a Stanley Cup in '06, before retiring last year. He's always been a bit elusive to Red Deer media, if not standoffish....but I am trying my best to get him on the show this weekend.

Another 'Canes Story Below:
---------------------------
From http://www.carolinahurricanes.com/

Red Deer native and 'Canes rookie Brandon Sutter "not quitting his day job".

Brandon Sutter decides to stick to hockey last night, Brandon Sutter visited the Carolina Ale House in Wake Forest to play Guitar Hero against some of the area's best young rockers.

Brandon was much better than he claimed before playing, Sandbag Sutter would have been a good nickname to start, but he did end up meeting his match several times.

Sutter got off with two quick victories but then was demolished by a young lady who hit 97% on the expert level. Brandon’s confidence was a little shaken, especially after he lost to a 6-year-old boy…but he finished strong and was a good sport throughout (everyone there would have dominated my skills).

Brandon stuck around to sign autographs and take photos. He even enjoyed his first Carolina Ale House meal.

------------------

Quite the scene at KIN CITY A last night, as the two Red Deer Midget AA squads met up in game two of their provincial playoff series. The RD Elks came in with a one goal lead after a 5-4 win over the Canyon Chiefs in game one. Game two last night ended in a 5-5 tie, meaning the Elks advance.

Thursday Recap

KAMLOOPS BLAZERS 2 RED DEER REBELS 1

-First of all, win or lose, it was a great hockey game at the Enmax Centrium last night, which should be the utmost concern for ticket-buyers. All in all, If I was going to a game, I'd probably rather watch the Rebels lose a great game then win a lousy one. Just a thought.

-Even though they didn't score early, I thought the first seven minutes was maybe the most energetic start the Rebels have had to a game this season.

39 shots on goal for Red Deer last night, and while they didn't get a TON of four-alarm chances, they did have ample opportunity to at least put a few pucks behind Blazers netminder Justin Leclerc, who played very well.

-Special teams continues to be the Rebels undoing unfortunately. The Blazers scored both their goals with the man-advantage, going 2 for 6 in the process. Two powerplay goals against (if not more) is the norm for this team right now.

-I thought Carter Smith, who scored his 16th of the season ( a beauty) was very good for Red Deer, as were Willie Coetzee and Adam Kambeitz. On the blueline, Cullen Morin and Alex Petrovic were both rock solid as well. Darcy Kuemper, who has had his ups and downs over the last couple of weeks, had one of his up games, making some big saves to keep the Blazer lead at one.

-Can we please see more than one quick replay of visiting teams goals on the video scoreboard? Goals are scored in hockey...it's not an insult to the home team to replay them.

-The Rebels have now lost three straight, and play host to the Kootenay Ice Friday night - 7:30 p.m. (www.big105.fm)

-------------------
The Bentley Generals draw first blood in the best-of-three Chinook League Final with a 4-1 win over Stony Plain last night:

PERIOD 3

Bentley Generals at 12:00 - Sean Robertson from Kevin Smyth

--------------

Game two goes in Stony Friday, Game three, if needed, goes Monday afternoon (3 p.m.) at the RD Arena.

Wednesday Note: Rebel Prospect

Red Deer Rebel Prospect Joel Lowry, (the son of CGY Hitmen head coach Dave Lowry) has been named the AMHL player of the month for January.

from WHL.ca

- Forward Joel Lowry of the Calgary Buffaloes (Chrysler Division).

Joel has provided the Buffaloes 5 solid efforts in 5 games in January. He was the most reliable player in the Buffaloes line-up – scoring 3 goals and adding 5 assists in 5 games.

Joel’s knowledge for the game of hockey has been very beneficial in the Buffaloes dressing room, along with his willingness to lead the team on the ice – whether he is blocking a shot or taking a hit.

Wednesday Gameday

RED DEER REBELS VS KAMLOOPS BLAZERS - 7 P.M. ENMAX CENTRIUM

I'll have the pregame show tonight starting at 6:30 (www.big105.fm)

The Rebels are just 3-12 in 2009, and could really use a win here Wednesday to right the ship somewhat.

Brennan Wray is likely out after suffering a concussion on the road trip.

I'll have more notes here prior to gametime, but here are a few thoughts from 19 year-old forward Jordie Deagle:

On the Blazers: "Even though the Blazers aren't doing as well this year, they're a team that has always worked really hard and prided themselves on that, so they're going to come in here and fight hard so we have to be ready."

On what the team did well in Swift Current ( A narrow 5-3 loss) "Well basically everything except our powerplay maybe, and a couple of key breakdowns that in the end cost us the game. We have to make sure we lock it up there and do everything we can to make sure it doesn't happen again. I thought other than that we played a good game."

On the line brawls over the weekend: It Makes you bond as a team. You cant have any individuals out there...and while we didnt have the success we wanted, at the same time it did feel like the team came together. Hopefully it will be the same thing this weekend."

On Brennan Wray out of the lineup: "Its huge....he's a huge part of the team, and plays in every situation..he plays forward and defense, but at the same time, it allows other players to step up and take on different roles."

-----------------------------
Notes: F Tyler Penny, who went back to the SJHL's Weyburn Red Wings this season, has six goals and 15 points in just 10 games.

I'll have audio clips from Bentley Generals head coach Brian Sutter and GM Jeff Mcginnis on the sports tommorow morning. The Generals host Stony Plain in game one of the Chinook League Final. (8:30 p.m. - Bentley Arena)

Chinook League Final Sked

The Schedule for the 2009 Chinook League Final has been released. Once again, it will be the Stony Plain Eagles and the Bentley Generals in a best of three.

Game one is set for tomorrow night (Wednesday) in Bentley (8:30 start)

Game two goes Saturday in Stony (7:30 start)

Game three, if necessary, will go here in RED DEER at the Arena Monday afternoon (3 p.m.)

As much as I'm sure the Generals want this series over in two straight, how great would that game be on Monday? On the Family Day holiday no less.
----

Also, the Red Deer Rebels have been fined $250.00 by the WHL for their second multiple fight game of the season in Swift Current Saturday.

From Bruce Luebke's blog in Brandon..... http://luberslounge.blogspot.com/

on Central Albertan Jordan Hale.

Hale Providing Depth
Jordan Hale's versatility is once again proving valuable to the Brandon Wheat Kings.

The 18-year old shifted to the blueline in December and January when the absence of captain Keith Aulie (World Junior Championship) and injuries to Mark Schneider and Chad Erb left the club shorthanded.

Now, with injuries to forwards Sanfred King and Scott Glennie, Hale has played left-wing for the last three games."If they want me to play forward, I'll play forward. If they want me to play D, I'll play D," said Hale following Monday's practice, "Anything to get me in the lineup. I'll do whatever it takes to get out there on that ice.""Going back to forward feels way easier for me," adds Hale, who has two goals and four points in 42 games this season,

"It's my normal position. Actually, the last couple of games when I've been playing forward, I've felt really good up there."

The Wheat Kings are back in action Tuesday night as they pay a visit to the Moose Jaw Warriors (6:45 p.m., CKLQ).

Weekend Autopsy

Sorry for no weekend updates...it looks like you were commenting on games I hadn't even talked about yet anyways.

For starters...let me say this: Prior to this four game road trip, I thought the Rebs needed at least five or six points to stay even remotely in the playoff hunt.

Four games later, they return with two, and were 12 seconds away from going 0-4. So there you have it. With 17 games to go, this is officially the white towel blog.

Saturday - Broncos 5 Rebels 3

1. S.C Wudrick, (22) (Tassone, Molle), 12:19

2. S.C Eakin, (18) , 10:12 (SH)
2. R.D Deagle, (3) (Egener, Archer), 13:53
2. R.D Smith, (15) (Morin, Petrovic), 15:38
2. S.C Stickland, (19) (Tassone, McAvoy), 17:20 (SH)

3. R.D Coetzee, (14) (Morin, Petrovic), 12:49 (PP)
3. S.C Vause, (7) (Doyle, Dalecky), 13:10 (PP)
3. S.C Wudrick, (23) , 19:36 (EN)

-To their credit, the Rebs played a pretty solid game, and an effort like this would have resulted in a victory in many rinks around the league. Unfortunately, decnt road games for this team have been few and far between, and it seems they need to play a PERFECT game to come away with anything these days.

-For the secod time in as many nights, the Rebels were involved in a line brawl, with Colin Archer, Josh Cowen, Luke Egener, Adam Kambeitz, and Cody Gross all dropping the mitts. I can only imagine the frustration that seems to set in with these guys, and it boiled over this weekend. You play well, you lose. you play poorly, you lose...big time.

The Rebs return to action this Wednesday - 7 p.m. (vs Kamloops Blazers) - Enmax Centrium
----------

Saturday - Blades 8 Rebels 1

-Not a lot to say here. This one got ugly.

2. R.D Smith, (14) (Coetzee, Morin), 4:36 (PP)
2. SAS Langkow, (12) (Kytnar, Hulak), 8:04 (PP)
2. SAS Wintoneak, (22) (Joe, Patterson), 11:05 (SH)

2. SAS Niemi, (6) (Kytnar, Hulak), 13:59 (PP)
2. SAS Patterson, (18) (Elliott, Chorneyko), 15:02

2. SAS Joe, (3) (Chorneyko), 19:24

3. SAS Gallimore, (22) (Hamilton), 2:36

3. SAS Chorneyko, (19) (Niemi, Elliott), 12:00 (PP)
3. SAS Hulak, (25) (Langkow, Kytnar), 19:58 (PP)

----------------

There WILL be plenty of playoff hockey here in Central Alberta though. Bentley and Stony will be hooking up again in the Chinook League Final. This should be a great series....schedule TBA

-The AAA Midget Optimist Rebels have had a tough time of late....but hopefully will get the ship back on the right track before heading into their post-season, Red Deer has yet to clinch a playoff spot though.

The RDC Queens have a couple of games to go before their playoffs as well. The Queens have dropped the ball the past couple of seasons..hopefully this is the season things turn around.

Friday Notes

RED DEER REBELS @ SASKATOON BLADES - 6 P.M.

(Cam Moon has the pregame show at 5:50 - www.big105.fm)

-This is stop three on a four-game road trip for Red Deer. The roadie started with a 5-0 loss in Brandon on Tuesday, and continued Wednesday with a 4-3 shootout win over Moose Jaw.

-In their last visit to Saskatoon, The Rebels pulled out a 3-0 back on December the 13th. Darcy Kuemper notched his second shutout of the season.

-Red Deer sits 8 points back of three different teams for the 8th and final playoff spot (Regina, Prince Albert, and Edmonton) The Pats and Oil Kings play each other tonight in Regina, while Prince Albert visits Brandon. Therein lies the trouble for the Rebs in the standings. When there is more than one team you have to leapfrog, it makes it very difficult to gain ground. If Red Deer wins tonight, they can still be no closer than eight points behind, because either Regina or Edmonton will also win.

----------------

Coming up Sunday on MORON SPORTS on 106.7 The Drive. I'll chat with Red Deer native Chris Mason. the St.Louis Blues goaltender had a spectacular month of January, and all of a sudden the St.Louis Blues are in the conversation when it comes to a playoff race.

Another Red Deer native, Matt Fraser of the Kootenay Ice, will come on as well. The Ice visit Red Deer next week, and ever since shelling at the deadline.....they've played better than I think anyone has expected.

Gregg Drinnan from the Kamloops Daily News is on the show this week as well to talk some WHL. The Blazers visit Red Deer this coming Wednesday. Drinnan writes one of the best hockey blogs on the net, and is a great source of league info.... http://gdrinnan.blogspot.com/

Wheat Kings Injury Note

From Bruce Luebke's blog in Brandon:

The Brandon Wheat Kings have learned that right-winger Scott Glennie has been lost indefinitely after sustaining a broken left elbow during last Saturday’s win in Calgary.

Glennie, who missed Tuesday’s game against the visiting Red Deer Rebels, is currently tied with Jay Fehr for 6th-place in the WHL scoring race with 27 goals and 66 points in 52 games.

A former second round bantam draft choice of the Wheat Kings, the 17-year old Winnipeg native has 53 goals and 125 points in 112 regular season games since joining the Wheat Kings in the fall of 2007.

Rebels win - End three game slide

RED DEER REBELS 4 MOOSE JAW WARRIORS 3 (SO)

-The Rebs found a way to pull one out of the fire last night in Moose Jaw. Down 3-2 in the dying seconds, Landon Ferraro pounced on a loose puck at the top of the crease to tie the game up with 12.7 seconds to go. Cass Mappin and Brennan Wray also scored for Red Deer, while Cullen Morin added two assists.

Here's the summary from last night:

2. M.J MacKay, (2) (Stanton, Smuk), 2:19 (PP)
2. R.D Mappin, (17) (Morin, Smith), 12:51 (PP)

3. M.J Bast, (16) (Filo, Suer), 4:09 (PP)
3. R.D Wray, (5) (Morin, Coetzee), 6:43
3. M.J Hood, (13) (Rowinski, Stanton), 8:15
3. R.D Ferraro, (29) (Coetzee), 19:48

-In overtime, a struggling Rebels PK came up big, killing off a Ferraro tripping minor, before Luke Egener ended the game in the shootout.

-In the shootout, Ferraro, Coetzee, Smith, Mappin, and Wray were all turned away before the "secret weapon" Egener found the net with a wrister. Egener is 2 for 2 in shootouts this season.

-It was a physical game, with 90 minutes in penalties, including fighting majors to Wray, Cody Esposito, Josh Cowen, and Brett Ferguson.

-Darcy Kuemper stopped 20 of 23 shots, but was a perfect six for six in the shootout.

-The win moves Red Deer to 1-1 on the four game road trip, still 10 points back of Edmonton, Regina, and P.A. Next Up: The Saskatoon Blades on Friday night (6 p.m. - www.big105.fm)

------
Also in the Western League last night: The Blades do Red Deer a favor, defeating the Edmonton Oil Kings 7-1. Red Deer's Colton Sceviour notched a goal and two assists as Lethbridge wins in Portland 4-3. Luca Sbisa scored the OT winner for the 'Canes

Tuesday Autopsy - Gameday

RED DEER REBELS VS MOOSE JAW WARRIORS - 6 P.M. (WWW.big105.fm)

Cam Moon and the pregame show get going at 5:50.

------
Lets be honest here for a minute. We keep talking about a "playoff race" and "stringing a few wins together" in regards to this Rebel team. The players say the right things..there continues to be moments of hope, and yes, they have "games in hand" which continues to be the saving grace when looking at the standings.

Realistically, things are bleak in regard to the playoffs, but if you're a Rebel fan, it's your duty to hold out hope.

All that said.....if the Rebels lose tonight in Moose Jaw, the landscape changes. The Warriors are the only team behind Red Deer in the conference. It's an absolute must win. I would say the perspective of this blog the rest of the season will have a lot to do with the game tonight.

Last night:

BRANDON WHEAT KINGS 5 RED DEER REBELS 0

1. BDN Green, (17) (Clark, Fehr), 11:32 (PP)
1. BDN Stone, (7) (Schenn, Calvert), 18:34

2. BDN Calvert, (13) (Stone, Schenn), 3:34
2. BDN Schenn, (23) (Calvert, Robak), 6:11 (PP)
2. BDN Robak, (10) (Calvert, Stone), 18:47 (PP)

-The Rebs only gave up 20 shots on the night, but Brandon made the most of their chances, chasing Darcy Kuemper after four goals on 14 shots. Cam Gorchynski mopped up.

-Brandon's powerplay went 3 for 6. There's your game story right there.

---------------------
Nice to see Red Deer native Chris Mason get on a roll with the St.Louis Blues. It's been a really tough year for Mace, and he seems to get shelled in the rare starts he gets.

But lately, his season has turned around, and the Blues are winning a few games. Since January 19th, Mason is 4-1 with two shutouts, and his save % for the season is up to .914.

More Monday Notes

i didn't write it...I merely posted it......an interesting Brent Sutter rumor below.

----------
I don't want to talk about the whole Kyle Beach incident anymore.....his suspension has been served.....BUT, I thought I'd relay a conversation I had with a member of the Lethbridge media Saturday night....

Basically, he said that "both parties" were at fault when the puck went over the stands. Beach for shooting it...AND THE FAN for not paying attention.

I couldn't believe my ears. Unbeleivable.

--------------
Saturday night, The Rebs dropped a 3-0 decision to the Hurricanes. A frustrating game for Red Deer, who did a solid job defensively for the both part, limiting the 'Canes to 18 shots. Unfortunately, three mistakes all resulted in goals, and on the other end, backup goaltender Micahel Tajdeh shut the door, stopping 38 shots for his first WHL shutout.

Molson Cup Three Stars:

1) Michael Tajdeh - 38 shaves for the shutout, what can you say.

2) Alex Petrovic - The Rebels 16 year old D played the shutdown role to a tee. I keep saying it, biut Petro gets better and better as the weeks go by.

3) Colton Sceviour - The Red Deer native was dangerous all night for the 'Canes, ringing a bullet off the post and setting up Zach Boychucks goal with a beauty pass in the second period.

FROM DEAN MILLARD IN EDMONTON - THE PIPELINE SHOW

Is Sutter Shuffling Back To Red Deer?
An interesting article in the New York Post from Saturday says that Brent Sutter might not be long for New Jersey and could return to B.C, Alberta. Yes it did say B.C, Alberta. I'm sure it was a typo and the writer does know that B.C. and Alberta are provinces in our fine country. You can read the full story here.

Here's the Cole's notes on the story: Sutter gave a no comment type answer to the question about him coaching the Devils next year. He reportedly misses his family. Has one more year on his contract. Could one day take over from 66 year old Lou Lamoriello as G.M. some day.

I spoke to someone close to the Rebels today who told me he wasn't surprised by the story, but doesn't think it will be next year. I was told Brent has a tremendous passion for junior hockey, in particular the Rebels. He really enjoyed his time around the team before the NHL season started this year, and returned to Red Deer during the NHL all star break getting the chance to catch a few games. Sutter apparently watches every Red Deer game online.

My source thinks sometime in the near future the 2 time Stanley Cup and 3 time Canada Cup champ as a player and Memorial Cup winner as a coach will return to Red Deer (maybe as soon as the 2010-1011 season) but as the General Manager only, as current head coach Jesse Wallin is doing a fine job rebuilding the Rebels.

What could complicate matters though is if Sutter is offered the G.M. post in Jersey. As for his family, I have no doubt he does miss them, however his oldest son is attending University in Calgary, his middle son Brandon is playing for Carolina, and his daughter is close to finishing High School, so in a few years there won't be any kids on the farm, and his wife Connie would be free to join him wherever he is coaching.

That's all for now.....I'll have more later this morning
